Modeling for Visual Language

3D renders of a painterly Renaissance environment, featuring a 15th century cinquedea, halberd, and shield. Modeled and rendered in Autodesk Maya, textured in Adobe Substance Painter.

For this project, I wanted to create a set of weapons from 15th century Northern
Italy. The style of the Renaissance weapons I researched had an intricacy and artistic
quality in them that really inspired me. The main weapon is a large dagger called a
cinquedea, which features an intricately engraved handle. The second weapon is an
“unusual” halberd with a long, sword-like blade. The final piece of the armory is a shield,
adorned with Sandro Botticelli’s The Madonna of the Magnificat.

This project was where I learned the basics of 3D modeling, including complex form manipulation, proper edge flow and polygon efficiency. Additionally, it demonstrates a development in the skills of generating realistic textures and lighting an indoor 3D-rendered environment.
